Success Center Teacher of the Year Michelle Carney is known for her motto: "I believe in you; now you just have to believe in yourself!"
"I love teaching because so many children and young adults do not have someone in their lives who motivates them or cares enough about them getting an education," the 22-year veteran educator said. "Because of their various backgrounds and circumstances, people have given up on them. I want every child and young adult to realize their full potential and know that someone cares enough about them and their future so that they will want to succeed and become the 'best them' that they can become."
Carney has taught in Douglas County since 2007 when she joined the staff at the Performance Learning Center. Prior to that, she taught at Camp Creek Middle School in Fulton County.
She earned her bachelor's degree in secondary English education from Southern University in Baton Rouge, Louisiana, and her master's degree in school counseling from the University of West Alabama.
Aside from being an educator and inspiration to her students, Carney is also a proud parent of two beautiful children and one exceptionally smart granddaughter. Her oldest daughter, Jordyn, is starting her career as a teacher at Chapel Hill High School. Her youngest son, Miles, is currently enrolled at Berry College in Rome, studying pre-veterinary science. Her granddaughter, Logan, is the best 3-year-old in the world.
During her time off from teaching, she enjoys singing karaoke, watching reality shows like Survivor and The Amazing Race, and collecting recipes to cook for her family.

The Success Center staff is currently reading The Coffee Bean by Jon Gordon & Damon West. Through the book, we are learning how to be... COFFEE BEANS! We don't want to be carrots, because they are weakened by their environment. We don't want to be eggs, because they are hardened by their environment. We want to TRANSFORM our environment like coffee beans!
